Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) & Homeowner Resources
What are Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs)?
Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) include spaces for sleeping, living, cooking and bathrooms separate from the principal unit. ADUs can be attached to a principal unit (such as in a basement, attic, or garage conversion) or detached. ADUs can provide space for your family, friends and out of town guests, an affordable rental unit or whatever uses you choose. Some people even build one to live in and rent out their house.
If you have a Homeowners Association (HOA), check regarding covenants, conditions and restrictions (CC&Rs) on ADUs.
Talk to a lender about options for financing an ADU. Conversions, new construction and manufactured units all have costs to consider.
Consult with a builder/contractor or manufacturer to estimate costs. If you are looking into a manufactured unit, consult the building department before you buy to make sure your preferred unit can successfully be placed.
Apply for a building permit. Once you have a building design and placement plans, you can apply for a permit to begin your work.
Your contractor can contact the City for inspections as needed during construction or installation.
